Last Minute Travel
Travel statistics indicate that last minute travel
is becoming more the rule than the exception. According to the Travel
Industry Association of American (TIA), 64 percent of travelers
in the past year planned at least one trip at the last minute. A
United States Tour Operators Association (USTOA) poll also indicates
that 86 percent of its members reported a significant increase in
last minute bookings.
There are many reasons for last minute travel. A family
emergency necessitates an unexpected trip. Perennial procrastinators
put off making hotel reservations until it's time to go. Air conditioning
fails and a last minute hotel reservation is a life saver. A business
opportunity knocks in another city and you must move fast to grab
it. The urge to splurge kicks in and you indulge it with a last
minute getaway. A spontaneous trip or visit is a perfect surprise
for family, old friends or a new love. An impromptu trip breaks
the monotony of everyday doldrums. And sometimes the best things
in life, including travel, are simply unplanned.
Most spur-of -the-moment travel bookings range from
one month to one hour in advance. The majority of last minute trips
are also close to home (less than 500 miles away) and travelers
drive their own automobile. Weekend getaways are common. Take a
Friday or Monday off, escape for a mini-vacation and return to work
refreshed and recharged. For these last minute travelers, hotel
reservations become a priority.
